Sunil Gavaskar to Virat Kohli

Should take guidance from India captain Virat Kohli Sachin Tendulkar Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said he takes inspiration from the maestro’s performance against Australia in the 2004 Sydney Test and returns to form.

“He should call SRT (Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar) immediately and ask what should I do,” Gavaskar said on air on Wednesday.

“[He should] Do what Sachin Tendulkar did in Sydney. Tell yourself I will not play cover drives,” Gavaskar said.

Kohli was dismissed for just seven at the hands of James Anderson on the first day of the third Test at Headingley here on Wednesday, tossing a ball well outside off-stump to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler as he attempted to drive.

This is the seventh time in 23 Tests that Anderson has dismissed Kohli in Test match cricket. England pacer Kohli has joined Australia spinner Nathan Lyon as the bowler with the most dismissals in the longest format.

The India captain has scored only 69 runs in four innings of three Tests, which has not been able to score even a half-century.

The former India opener and captain, who reached 10,000 runs for the first time in Test cricket, said Kohli chasing the ball outside the off-stump is worrying.

“It is a bit of a concern for me because he is getting out on the fifth, sixth and even seventh stumps. In 2014, he was getting out more around the off-stump,” said Gavaskar, pointing to the fact that he was being groomed to play outside the off-stump.

Tendulkar played a very patient innings during the fourth Test of the 2003–04 series against Australia in Sydney. He curbed his instincts and did not play a cover drive and scored an unbeaten 241 during his stay of 613 minutes and 436 balls. India declared 705/7 and placed Australia under Kosh before the home team survived and applied. Drag.
