Sujoy Ghosh talks about being the right choice for Abhishek Bachchan as ‘Bob Biswas’

New Delhi: Ever since the trailer of ‘Bob Biswas’ dropped where fans are excited to see Abhishek Bachchan as the contract killer, there is a different kind of curiosity about the film regarding its casting.

The film is a spin-off of the previous ‘Kahaani’ released in 2012, in which the character of Bob was portrayed by Shashwat Chatterjee.

Despite being a Bengali actor without an appearance in the first Hindi film, Saswata’s character and performance were highly appreciated by audiences across the country, it is only natural to expect to see her as ‘Bob Biswas’ as the character’s face. Was. ,

However, the news of Abhishek playing the title role of ‘Bob Biswas’ surfaced in 2019.

Talking about why Abhishek was cast, writer Sujoy Ghosh told IANS, “It was a very thoughtful decision to cast a new actor to play the role of Bob Biswas as I am interested in ‘Kahaani’. This is not that film. This ki Duniya film is different. This is a new film, which has a stand of its own.

“Through this film, we have attempted to create a whole new world of Bob Biswas, with a fresh new approach to the story. In fact, that is one of the reasons why I did not direct the film. In the earlier film, When Bob was introduced (referring to the ‘story’) his presence was only eight minutes. Now, we have a full story on that.”

In the past, there were many such legendary characters in which the same actor played a character in different films.

For example, Goopy and Bagha are two such fictional Bengali characters created by Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury. Later, eminent filmmaker Satyajit Ray made three films based on those two characters. They were played by Bengali actors – Tapan Chatterjee and Rabi Ghosh respectively.

When asked why he chose not to follow Ray’s path, Sujoy explained, “I am saying it is not impossible to recreate the world of Bob Biswas, where Saswata, who played Bob earlier, was cast. In fact, if I were directing the film, Shashwata would have been a choice, but Diya is directing the film and she has made the choice. She has her own vision for the film. Our idea is a new film. to create, in which Bob’s world is different from what we’ve seen in ‘Story’.”

The film is written by Sujoy and directed by Diya Annapurna Ghosh.

This is the first time that fans will get to see Abhishek in a never-before-seen avatar in which his look is unrecognizable as a semi-bald and overweight middle-aged man.

Have a look at the trailer of the film:

Sharing his experience of working with Abhishek, Sujoy said, “I think Diya has done a great job of convincing him to become the character written on paper. Abhishek gained weight, boasted to be Bob. We have seen in the trailer or will see in the film for that matter. What was great about Abhishek is his resilience… When I saw him in his final form, I felt a sense of humor. I’m so happy to have seen Bob the way I did as a writer.”

Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, ‘Bob Biswas’ also stars Chitrangada Singh, Paran Bandopadhyay and Tina Desai. It will release on ZEE5 on December 3.
