Students of Telangana’s IIIT Basara demand appointment of regular VC, protest over poor quality of food

Students of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technology (RGUKT) in Telangana continued their protest for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. In Basara town of Nirmal district, students of RGUKT, popularly known as IIIT Basara, were protesting at the main gate of the building in support of their demands. They are protesting the poor quality of food and are demanding improvement in other infrastructure facilities and also appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor.

Fighting the rain, hundreds of students continued their sit-in for the second day. They were carrying placards and were raising slogans for their 12 demands.

The students also demanded that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and Information Technology Minister KT Rama Rao personally visit RGUKT to see the problems being faced by them.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order. Senior officials were monitoring the situation. The police was also keeping a strict vigil to prevent the students from coming out of the campus.

The students have complained that the food being served in the hostel mess is of substandard quality. They allege that on several occasions small insects and frogs were found in the food of the hostel.

“We do not even have proper drinking water facility. Though this was brought to the notice of the authorities several times, no action was taken,” said a student leader.

The students have resolved to continue the strike till their problems are resolved.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy has said that she has called a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor. He assured that all the issues would be resolved at the earliest. The minister’s assurance came after IT minister KT Rama Rao tweeted that he would bring the issues to the notice of the education minister. Rama Rao was replying to a tweet by a student, in which he pointed out the problems. Battini Teja Gaur wrote that 8,000 students are sitting on the road waiting for their answers.
