The Hansraj College unit of the SFI said in a statement that there is an uproar inside the college campus against the “ban” on non-vegetarian food and a protest will be held outside the Hansraj hostel on January 20.

a group of students belonging to the student union of India (SFI) at DU’s Hansraj College has given a call to “stop” non-vegetarian food at the institute and protest against alleged attempts to “saffronise the campus”.

The Hansraj College unit of the SFI said in a statement that there is an uproar inside the college campus against the “ban” on non-vegetarian food and a protest will be held outside the Hansraj hostel on January 20.

Students said Hansraj College had stopped serving non-vegetarian food in its canteen and hostel after it reopened in February last year after the pandemic. However, no official order has come on this.

The SFI claimed that there have been instances where the Hansraj administration confiscated eggs from students who brought them to the hostel.

It said that a survey was conducted inside the Hansraj hostel in which around 75 per cent students were found to be non-vegetarians. The SFI said Rama Sharma, the principal of Hansraj, had earlier claimed that 90 per cent of the students of the college were vegetarian.

“Most of the students of Hansraj are against this ban on non-vegetarian food and see it as an attempt to establish cultural hegemony. When these issues were raised on campus there was a violent reaction by right-wing forces to suppress it,” the statement said.

This reaction of the right-wing forces and the attitude of the administration towards it shows the attempt to saffronise the university campuses.

Alok Sharma, a third-year student living in a hostel, said the college suddenly stopped serving non-vegetarian food. “We were not informed about any such order. I don’t think any order has been issued. this is unfair. We are staying away from our families and we need proper food.”
