Strict warning: Doing these 24 things online can lead to government employees in ‘trouble’

The government has issued strict cyber security guidelines for all government employees including contract workers. New Guidelines by Ministry of Electronics and Information technology Issued to all ministries and departments India To “sensitize government employees” about the importance of cyber security.

“The increasing use and use of ICTs has increased the attack surface and threat perception for the government, as proper cyber security practices are not followed on the ground. To sensitize Government employees and contract/outsourced resources and to create awareness among them about Do’s and Don’ts.
These guidelines have been compiled from the perspective of cyber security. as per guidelines,

The government has warned that “any non-compliance can lead to action by the concerned CISOs/department heads” and the employees may face consequences.

As per the guidelines, here is a list of 24 things that government employees should keep in mind:

1. Do not use the same password across multiple services/websites/apps.

2. Do not save your password in the browser or in any unsecured document.

3. Do not write any passwords, IP addresses, network diagrams or other sensitive information on any unsafe material (ex: sticky/Post-It notes, plain paper pinned or posted on your desk, etc.)

4. Do not save your data and files on the system drive (ex: c:\ or root).

5. Do not upload or save any internal/restricted/confidential government data or files to any non-government cloud service (ex: google drive, dropbox, etc.).

6. Do not use obsolete or unsupported operating systems.

7. Do not use any third party DNS service or NTP service.

8. Do not use any third party anonymity services (ex: Nord VPN, Express VPN, Tor, Proxies, etc.).

9. Do not use any third party toolbars (ex: Download Manager, Weather Tool Bar, AskMe Tool Bar, etc.) in your Internet browser.

10. Do not install or use any pirated software (ex: cracks, keygen, etc.).

11. Do not open any link or attachment contained in an email sent by an unknown sender.

12. Do not share system password or printer passcode or Wi-Fi password with any unauthorized person.

13. Do not allow Internet access to the printer.

14. Do not allow the printer to store your print history.

15.Do not disclose any sensitive details on social media or third party messaging
Apps.

16. Do not plug-in any unauthorized external devices, including USB drives shared by an unknown person

17. Do not use any unauthorized remote administration tools (Ex: Teamviewer, AmyAdmin, AnyDesk, etc.)

18. Do not use any unauthorized third party video conferencing or collaboration tools to conduct sensitive internal meetings and discussions.

19. Do not use any external email service for official communication.

20. Do not jailbreak or root your mobile phone.

21. Do not use the Administrator account or any other account with administrative privileges for your routine work.

22. Do not use any external mobile app based scanner services (ex: CamScanner) to scan internal government documents.

23. Do not use any external website or cloud-based services to convert/compress any government document (ex: Word to PDF or file size compression)

24. Do not share any sensitive information over the telephone or by any other means with any unauthorized or unknown person.
