Stone pelting at police station in Karnataka: Violence erupted due to social media posts, people surrounded the police station; 12 policemen injured

A mob pelted stones at Old Hubli police station in Dharwad district of Karnataka on Saturday night. In this, 12 policemen including an inspector were injured. Section 144 has been imposed in the city after the violence. About 40 people have been arrested in this case.

Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Labh Ram said that a person had shared an objectionable post on social media targeting the Muslim community. Others objected to this and lodged a complaint with the police. After this, the police arrested the youth and registered a case against him.

Tear gas shells were fired to disperse the crowd
Dissatisfied with the action taken against the man, a large number of people gathered outside the police station around midnight and started creating ruckus. They started pelting stones at the police station and vandalizing police vehicles. The police then resorted to mild lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Stones were also pelted on a hospital and Hanuman temple.
The police commissioner said that six cases have been registered against those involved in the violence. Now the situation is under control and security has been beefed up at all places. Apart from this, there have also been reports of stone pelting at a hospital and Hanuman temple.

Karnataka Chief Minister said – the accused will not be spared
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, ‘I want to state clearly that whoever takes the law into their own hands, our police will take strict action against them. Whoever they are, so whoever is behind this and whoever has instigated the mob will be punished. I want to ask the organizations behind such incidents not to break the law. The state of Karnataka will not tolerate this.

State Home Minister said – it was a pre-planned attack
State Home Minister Araga Gyanendra said the condition of a police officer was critical. He has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. Gyanendra said, ‘Some people involved in the attack have been arrested. It was a pre-planned attack.
