Krishna Janmashtami, the Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, falls on Monday, August 26. Due to the festival, many banks in various cities will be closed, as announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its annual holiday schedule.
Will BSE and NSE Be Open on August 26, 2024?
However, financial markets will remain operational. Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be open for trading on Janmashtami.
The list of trading holidays for the Equity Segment, Equity Derivative Segment, and SLB Segment is released annually at the start of the year.
For the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), trading will proceed as usual during both the morning and evening sessions on Krishna Janmashtami.
Banks will be closed in Gujarat, Odisha, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Jammu, Srinagar, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Himachal Pradesh on Monday.

Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami, is a significant Hindu festival that marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. Celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm, the festival is observed by millions of devotees across India and around the world.
The festivities often include fasting, singing devotional songs, reciting scriptures, and participating in reenactments of Krishna’s life, particularly the famous “Dahi Handi” event where groups form human pyramids to break a pot of curd, symbolising Krishna’s playful and mischievous nature. Temples are beautifully decorated, and midnight prayers are held, as it is believed that Krishna was born at the stroke of midnight.
