State pitches for UGC accreditation for Rajendra University Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Rajendra UniversityThe application for grant of accreditation after being upgraded to the University was rejected by University Grants Commission (UGC) Last year.

The institution had sought recognition according to section 2(f) of the UGC Act. The Commission provides financial assistance to eligible colleges, which are covered under section 2(f), and have been declared fit to receive central assistance (UGC grants) under section 12(b) of the UGC Act, 1956.
The commission had in December last year rejected the application for recognition of the university, saying, “Since the university has been notified through a government notification and has not been established by an act of the state legislature, it is Cannot be included in the list of established universities. As per section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. In a letter to the UGC, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Saswat Mishra said, “It is legally and factually incorrect to say that Rajendra University has not been established under any Act of the State Legislature. The Odisha Universities Act, 1989 – a valid law of the state legislature – empowers the state government to establish new universities by notification.”
Mishra further said that the government has created several other universities including Rama Devi Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Fakir Mohan University and GM University Sambalpur under Section 32(1) of the Odisha Universities Act, 1989. Rajendra University vice-chancellor Umaballav Mohapatra said, “We had applied for recognition, but the UGC rejected it.
