SRH captain Kane Williamson laments ‘disappointing season’ after close loss

Sunrisers Hyderabad continue to chase down their second win of IPL 2021, having succumbed to their eighth loss of the season against Punjab Kings on Saturday. In a low-scoring contest, SRH came close to ending their wait but fell short of the target by six runs, chasing 126 to finish 120/7.

On a tough Sharjah pitch, SRH bowlers did well to keep PBKS at 125/7, with Jason Holder scoring 3/19. However, they lost David Warner and Kane Williamson within the first three overs and from then on it became a tricky question.

Captain Williamson praised their bowlers and fielders, saying that SRH had come close but the target proved out of reach due to lack of good partnerships.

“I think the bowling and fielding did a great job,” Williamson said during a post-match interview. “The surface was tough. We were definitely supporting ourselves to get closer. The partnership required and we were definitely supporting ourselves to get closer.”

After playing his part with the ball, Holder kept the competition alive as he smashed five sixes in his unbeaten 29-ball 47 and had it not been for him, the margin of defeat would have been bigger. “It took great individual performances from Jason Holder on both sides, especially with the bat to keep the match competitive,” Williamson said.

SRH continue to be at the bottom and their chances of qualifying for the playoffs hang by a thread. “It’s been a disappointing season. For us it was about building the platform. It was quite a challenge to pounce on them without losing wickets. Games are thick and fast. We need to come into the next match with fresh eyes and freedom. We will try and give our best. Smart cricket needs to be played on different surfaces.

SRH will next face Rajasthan Royals at the Dubai International Stadium on Monday.
