Squid Game: Korean speakers slam Netflix for ‘butching’ English subtitles

The massively popular survivalist Korean-drama Squid game has got everyone talking since its release on September 17th. The show streams on the popular OTT platform and is on its way to become the most watched show in the world. While audiences around the world are enjoying the violent dystopian drama, many Korean-English speakers are outraged by Netflix ‘botching’ the show’s English subtitles. A Twitter thread from a Korean speaker has gone viral after he gave a behind-the-scenes description of all the moments lost in translation. The user has alleged that viewers with subtitles are watching a completely different show.

Twitter user Yangmi Meyer wrote a lengthy thread explaining how the subtitles do not represent the essence of Korean lines. He started his tweet like this, “Not weird but I’m fluent in Korean and I watched squid game with english subtitles and if you don’t understand korean you haven’t really seen the same show. The translation was very bad. The dialogue was so well written and the void of it was preserved.”

She continued, “I want to do a visual breakdown on TikTok to show you what they could have translated I can work on it today so you can see what I mean and see what you missed . how shameful it is. Translation is extremely important.”
