Sputnik V vaccine more effective on Omicron variants than Pfizer, suggests study

New Delhi: A preliminary study suggests that Russian-made Sputnik V is more effective against the Omicron variant than the drug Pfizer. The study was carried out jointly by the Italian Spallanzani Institute, an institute for infectious diseases, and the Gamallea Center.

According to a press statement released by the institute on Thursday, the trials showed that “the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine has 2 times the virus neutralizing antibodies in the Omicron (b.1.1.529) variant compared to 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.” Exhibits higher titers (2.1 times higher overall and 2.6 times higher at 3 months after vaccination).

The study shows that Sputnik V neutralizes the Omicron variant by eliciting a strong antibody response. This further explains study data which states that “83.3% of individuals vaccinated with Sputnik V were able to neutralize the Omicron variant, compared to 83.3% of those vaccinated with Pfizer.” “

The institute explains the reason for such results, saying, “The Sputnik v. Pfizer vaccine develops a broader pool of antibodies to different epitopes, in contrast to the vaccine, which primarily utilizes spike proteins in a proline-stabilized form directed to specific epitopes.” does, which were highly affected by mutations in omicron Variants.”

The mix and match trial combination was conducted in five sites, ultimately resulting in Sputnik Light being more efficient at producing antibodies than the “homologous regimen (two shots of the same vaccine),” the researchers’ statement said.

However, the vaccine still has to be reviewed by peer scientists. Sputnik V has been authorized in 71 countries and Sputnik Lite in more than 30 countries so far.
