The new feature was first introduced on foldables and now Google is introducing it to Android tablets with these versions.

Android tablets are still some way away from becoming the ideal iPad competitor, but Google seems to be heading in the right direction with support for the split keyboard now coming to tablets as well. With the launch of the Pixel tablet earlier this month and bringing in the Pixel Foldable to make things interesting for consumers, Google definitely has its focus on tablets.

Foldables have already received support, and now tablets are getting their due. Google has mentioned that Android 12L was made for such devices and future Android versions promise to focus on these mass factors.

Bringing a split keyboard shows that the company means business. But does the feature serve to improve Android tablets? It works in the same way as the foldable version, and is not enabled by default.

You need to go to the device’s keyboard settings and select the split keyboard layout to use it on the slate. You can see that there are some keys on both screens while the space bar has been stretched to fit the aspect ratio of the tablet.

Features like these help Android mature for tablets, but it’s still funny to say that more than a decade after Android-powered tablets arrived. No wonder Apple has a clear edge in this segment.

Make no mistake, Android tablet performance is not the issue, you go through reviews of any tablet, and most of them will talk about ineffective software that is holding back the growth and development of Android tablets. It looks like Google is finally ready to take Android seriously for tablets and we hope to see the results in a good light in the near future.
