Sunil Jakhar was the first choice of the Congress high command after the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh. Jakhar was out of Punjab in Bengaluru. He was called by sending a message. Jakhar Camp’s claim, had the support of 40 MLAs, still not accepted
The Jakhar camp also claims that 40 out of 65 MLAs were in their support in the legislature party meeting. So his claim was strong. Nevertheless, he was thrown out of the CM race by making the issue of Sikh state-Sikh CM. However, after this Jakhar was also offered to make him deputy CM. Which he rejected. Congress insiders say that through Jakhar, the Congress high command wanted to strike a Hindu-Sikh balance in Punjab. Party chief Navjot Sidhu Jatt is a Sikh. With Jakhar coming to the CM’s chair, a Hindu leader would have come. After the issue of Sikh state was raised, there was a consensus about Sukhjinder Randhawa. However, after Jakhar’s name was dropped, Navjot Sidhu also staked claim. He said that only Jatt Sikh has to be made, then he should be made CM. Due to this Randhawa became weak and by the wish of Sidhu, Sikh-Dalit face Charanjit Channi got the chair of CM.
