Specialists on duty: See their first C-section, sterilization in the health centers of remote areas of UP

A woman with a complicated pregnancy gave birth via caesarean section on the day of Holi at the Community Health Center (CHC) of Maudaha, a sub-district of Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The moment was special for Moudaha, as it was the first C-section performed at CHC.

Usually in such situations, pregnant mothers were taken to hospitals in far-flung areas, mainly in the districts.

Not only Maudaha, 29 other sub-district CHCs in 27 districts are now recording their first C-sections.

“The idea is to attract experts and provide them with fair pay and appropriate posts. “They will have to work for at least 13-15 years in hospitals while providing specialist service to the public,” said Amit Mohan Prasad, additional chief secretary, health and family welfare, government of Uttar Pradesh.

“To pursue a masters degree over and above MBBS, doctors have to spend more years studying and it is late to enter the job market. Once they were admitted, they ended up working under their classmates or juniors, which discouraged them from joining government service,” Prasad told News18.com.

“Therefore, we devised a policy to attract specialists by offering Level-2 instead of Level-1 while joining the healthcare of UP. An MBBS doctor has been inducted into Level-1, who will attain Level-2 after spending four-five years in service.

In the last three months, for the first time in other CHCs including Mariahu in Jaunpur, Rudrapur and Salempur in Deoria, Sakaldiha in Chandauli, Patti in Pratapgarh, Chopan and Ghorawal of Sonbhadra, Azamgarh’s Koilsa have witnessed medical procedures done by specialists for the first time.

Apart from C-sections, other specialized procedures are also seen in CHC, A case in point: A hernia repair surgery (also known as mesh hernioplasty) was conducted recently by newly recruited general surgeons at the CHC in Mawana, Meerut district. In Hapur, in March, nasal septoplasty was performed by an ENT surgeon.

Many gynecologists at these CHCs have performed mini-lap surgeries, postpartum sterilization and medical termination of pregnancy – essential procedures that would otherwise have been referred to district hospitals due to paucity of specialists.
