Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday announced the construction of a Special Crime Investigation Branch Under the Commissionerate Police to prevent the ever increasing crimes in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
The proposed unit will be headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
it will check Organized crime, drug trafficking and economic offences, said a written statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.
Naveen has sanctioned 59 posts including one DCP, one additional deputy commissioner of police, three assistant commissioners of police, nine inspectors, twelve sub-inspectors and three assistant sub-inspectors for the smooth functioning of the special crime unit.
Keeping in view the expansion of the boundaries of the Twin Cities and the increase in population, the government has also decided to upgrade three police outposts to police stations.
These include the first outpost under Balianta police station (Bhubaneswar), Info Valley outpost under Jatni police station (Bhubaneswar) and Bentakar outpost under Cuttack Sadar (Cuttack) police station.
Police Commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi said that the new crime investigation unit will work on the lines of DCP (crime) in Delhi and Mumbai.
“The proposed DCP (Crime) will operate from Bhubaneswar and oversee the investigation of sensational crimes in the twin cities. The new unit will also reduce the pressure on the regional DCP.”
It is to be noted that the government is planning to introduce the Odisha Goonda and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act to check organized crime syndicates across the state.
The draft bill has been sent to the law department. It states that an anti-social person shall be declared a goonda if his violent act disturbs public order and endangers the safety of the public.
The proposed law will help reduce crimes like extortion, land grabbing, contract killings, child pornography and cyber stalking in the state.
The proposed special law may address land grabbing by builders and land mafia, kidnapping for extortion, crimes against women and elderly people.
