After living together for 15 years, Aamir Khan And Kiran Rao announced their divorce via a joint statement earlier today. The couple, who met for the first time on the sets of Lagaan, tied the knot in 2005 and went on to star in several successful films including Peepli Live, Delhi Belly and Dangal. The announcement has left the fraternity and audience, including Khan’s close friend, Amin Haji, in shock.
Talking about the couple’s decision, Haji says, “My family has known about this for a while but it is just Aamir and Kiran and have decided to announce it today. I am still coming to terms with this great loss. He is with Azad (Rao Khan) in Kargil as we speak. Actually, Kiran sent me a picture of the three of them this morning. I showed it to my family and told them that they are still together but that their marital status has changed.”
Breaking down during the conversation, Haji said that he tried to talk to the couple to see if things could be worked out, “Aamir was the best man in my marriage and I was the best man in his marriage to Kiran so this A personal loss for us. We sat together and discussed it, but as I said, these people don’t make a decision until they read it thoroughly. I didn’t tell them you can’t do it, but I wish I could. But I respect both of them and their decision. I know it was heartbreaking for them too. I am really heartbroken and I told my wife Charlotte. This is a big loss for me. Sometimes two good people can’t be together.”
Emotional over the couple’s decision, Haji wishes they stay strong together. “Aamir and Kiran are mature people. They are a great team and they achieved many great successes together with Azad Rao Khan with many ventures on the personal front and professionally. We have to respect them, love them and accept this decision without raising any questions. I pray for their happiness and to be with each other always.”
