Sonia Gandhi’s 71-year-old secretary booked for raping Dalit woman

New Delhi: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi’s 71-year-old personal secretary PP Madhavan has been booked for allegedly raping a Dalit woman in the national capital. Deputy Commissioner of Police M Harsh Vardhan said a complaint was received at Uttam Nagar police station on June 25. Accordingly, a case was registered under sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. So far no arrest has been made in this case. “We are probing the allegations leveled by the victim woman,” the DCP said.

The police did not reveal the name of the accused, however, said that he is a 71-year-old man who is working as PS to a senior political leader.

However, according to the FIR lodged at Uttam Nagar police station, accessed by IANS, the woman has alleged that she was raped by Madhavan on the pretext of marriage and job.

The woman said in her complaint that she used to accompany her husband to the Congress office in Delhi where her husband used to put up hoardings.

She said that her husband died in 2020 after which she went to the Congress office several times for a job and finally met Madhavan there, who promised her a job and interviewed her a few days later.

The copy of the FIR, written in Hindi, reads, “He became more friendly with me and told me that he was a divorcee and wanted to marry me. Even I said yes as I was also single and was devastated.”

The woman alleged that she was raped in the month of February and it was later revealed that Madhavan was still married.

She alleged, “He even once asked me to have a physical relationship with another man.”

The woman also alleged that she was repeatedly threatened with dire consequences for being called an accused.
