Ahead of the 2022 assembly elections, it seems that soldiers are the main focus of both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in Uttarakhand.

For Rahul Gandhi’s rally on Thursday, a cut-out of General Bipin Rawat – who recently died in a tragic helicopter crash – has been placed prominently alongside former Congress president and former prime minister Indira Gandhi. Notably, Rawat’s cut-out size is bigger than Rahul Gandhi’s cut-out.

The families of serving and ex-servicemen play an important role in the electoral constituency of the state. A day earlier on Wednesday, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone of a war memorial in Dehradun. The entrance gate of the monument is named after General Rawat. The ruling party also honored around 200 families of the martyrs on the occasion.

The Congress is also planning to focus on soldiers’ issues at Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vijay Samman rally’ on December 16, when Bangladesh celebrates 50 years of independence from Pakistan. In 1971, Indira Gandhi led the Indian Army which eventually crushed Pakistan.

State Congress president Ganesh Godiyal said the Congress “respects” soldiers when asked why cut-outs of General Rawat were kept at a political rally.

General Bipin Rawat was the pride of the country. He belongs to Uttarakhand. General Rawat always stood for social interest in his home state. The (cut-outs) are a sign of our respect for the great soldier.” The party has also invited ex-servicemen to the rally. Some of them were seen garlanded by Godiyal.

The ruling BJP, however, has accused the Congress of “dragging” General Rawat into party politics. “The sudden attachment of the Congress to the soldiers is understood in this election season. He should have kept General Rawat’s name out of his politics,” said party spokesperson Vipin Kainthola.
