Kolhapur: Four contract workers died of suffocation after entering the underground drainage pipeline to clear the jam in the city. solapur city on Thursday.
The contract workers, who had not been identified at the time of going to press, were working on a project to lay a new underground drainage pipeline to connect the old one. Solapur Municipal Corporation Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, it has started the work of laying new underground drainage pipelines in its suburbs.
City Deputy Commissioner of Police Vaishali Kadukar said, “The incident took place on Thursday evening in a suburban colony along the Akkalkot-Solapur highway.”
The DCP said that two workers had found the new drain choke. He said, “Both came down the manhole to check it. After a few minutes, two other workers went down the manhole to check it.”
“The four workers did not come out, so two more workers entered the drain to check them. The first four workers died of suffocation in the pipeline. Some local residents helped rescue the remaining two workers, who were undergoing treatment here. It is a civil hospital.
They’re doing fine. The identity of the laborers who died is being done. We have recorded the deaths due to the accident.” Solapur Municipal commissioner P Shiv Shankar said the workers should have been in protective gear before entering the manhole. “A case will be registered against those responsible for the incident,” Shankar said. The civic body has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased workers.
