Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has reacted to the ongoing communal violence in his country with a flurry of attacks against minority Hindus. It has been almost a week since Durga Puja saw violent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.

At least six people have been killed and hundreds injured in the communal violence. The attacks reportedly started after an alleged blasphemy incident at a Durga Puja mandap in Kamila.

Murtaza said the events had shattered his heart and he prayed that God would show him the right path.

He wrote his thoughts in Bengali, which briefly translates to, “Yesterday I saw two pitfalls. A Bangladesh cricket team, which tormented me. The other is the whole of Bangladesh, something that shattered my heart. This red and green (the color of the flag symbolizing the nation) is not what we wanted. How many dreams, how much hard earned money was lost in one stroke. May Allah guide us.”

The United Nations has urged the Bangladesh government to ensure the safety of minorities and ensure a fair investigation into the incidents.

“The recent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, motivated by hate speech on social media, are against the values of the Constitution and need to be stopped. We call upon the government to ensure the safety of minorities and a fair investigation. We call on all to join hands to strengthen an inclusive tolerant Bangladesh,” said Mia Seppo, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said that inter-community relations have been breached to defame the government. Asaduzzaman said, “The incident that led to the violence in Comilla was planned by some people to disturb inter-community relations and defame our government.”
