Today the weather is better, but Saturday may be bad: MeT

Srinagar: For the third consecutive day, moderate snowfall in the hills and moderate snowfall occurred in the plains on Wednesday in Kashmir, bringing down the day temperature and disrupting both air and road traffic.
Farooq Ahmed, in-charge of the Meteorological Department’s office in Srinagar, told Kashmir Reader that the hilly areas received heavy snowfall while the plains experienced moderate snowfall and rain.
“This pattern is expected to persist till night, but there is a possibility of less rain during the day from Thursday,” Ahmed said.
However, the weather will remain affected from Thursday evening to Sunday. There is a high probability of snowfall on Saturday,” he said, adding that the temperature is also going to drop due to incessant rain and snowfall.
The highest snowfall was recorded in Gulmarg with 2.5 feet of snow, while Pagalgam received 2 feet of snowfall. The plains gained up to six inches, Ahmed pointed out.
The snowfall in the upper reaches has made the roads slippery, making travel difficult, the report said.
While there was heavy snowfall, flights remained suspended at the Srinagar airport. Srinagar airport director Kuldeep Singh told Kashmir Reader that 37 of the 42 scheduled flights could not take off due to poor visibility.
Due to the cancellation of flights, many people faced inconvenience at the airport. They had to wait till they were asked to go back to their homes when the cancellation was announced.
Singh said that there is a possibility that the weather conditions will improve on Thursday so that the aircraft will be able to take off.
The traffic department has asked people to contact the control room before traveling on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. There was also an accident in Ramban in which a civilian was killed and another was injured. The injured were taken to SKIMS for specialized treatment. Other major roads like Mughal Road and Joji La Pass remained closed due to accumulation of snow.
