Smriti Irani's 'Lady Member' address to MP sparks debate in Lok Sabha

Union Minister Smriti Irani said that she did not say anything unparliamentary

new Delhi:

Union Minister Smriti Irani today wondered why a woman member of Parliament cannot be addressed as a woman.

Her remarks came after Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Trinamool Congress’ Saugata Ray objected to Ms Irani’s mention of YSRCP’s Geeta Vishwanath Vanga as a woman member during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha.

She said the minister should have addressed her as an “honorable member”, to which Ms Irani said nothing she said was unparliamentary and it was not wrong to refer to a female member as a woman.

“I have not disrespected his presence in the House,” Irani said.

BJD’s Anubhav Mohanty stood in support of Irani and said that he has not used any unparliamentary or derogatory or wrong words.
