SKM will stop farmers’ strike today, get assurance from center on MSP and other demands

New Delhi: After a 14-month-long agitation by farmers led by the United Kisan Morcha (SKM), it was announced that the protests would be called off on Thursday after a meeting this afternoon.

The decision to call off the protest was taken by a five-member panel after the central government accepted the second draft resolution.

The second draft proposal included assurance on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and withdrawal of police cases registered against farmers in various states.

Ashok Dhawale, one of the members of the committee which interacted with the government, said that they have received a revised draft proposal from the government which has accepted the demands of the government.

“We will receive the final copy of the draft proposal at 12 noon on Thursday. After holding a meeting of SKM leaders in Singhu, we will formally take a call to reduce the intensity of the protest,” Dhawale said.

The Center has also agreed to withdraw the cases registered against farmers for burning stubble. It has also agreed to introduce the Electricity Amendment Bill and give Rs 5 lakh more jobs to the next of kin of farmers who lost their lives during the protest.

“The agreement was reached after the government agreed to withdraw all cases registered during the agricultural agitation and for stubble burning. The government also assured us that it will introduce the Electricity Amendment Bill. Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments have also agreed to give Rs 5 lakh compensation and job to the families of the deceased farmers on the lines of Punjab government. Moreover, the government agreed to our demands to include only SKM leaders in the MSP committee, apart from officials from the state, the Center and agriculture experts,” said one of the committee members.
