Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Deendayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushal Yojana to provide employment to 5.5 crore rural youth of the country is proving unsuccessful. In the last 4 years, there has been a huge decline of 90% in rural youth getting training for employment under this scheme under Skill India. 4 years ago, 1 lakh 37 thousand got employment, but now this number has come down to 22 thousand.

The latest report of the Ministry of Rural Development has revealed that four years ago, 2 lakh 41 thousand 509 rural youth were being trained under this scheme. Now this number has been reduced to 23 thousand 186. However, the government is not deterring from claiming that about 95% of the youth who have taken the training have been successful in getting employment.

For example, the government claims that Under this scheme, more than 23 thousand people trained last year and 22 thousand got employment. But if we look at the year-wise data of youth taking rural employment training, it is found that there has been a decline of 90% in the number of youth taking training. After the disclosure, the Ministry of Rural Development has instructed all the states and union territories to take appropriate steps seriously in this regard.

Trend of decline in training since last 2 years

yb When the states sent the figures, the reality came to the fore
According to sources, the Ministry of Rural Development had sought data from the states. When information came, it was revealed that the percentage of those who got employment through training is more than 90, but the participation of youth is decreasing. Now the ministry has directed the states and union territories to conduct awareness campaigns and organize employment fairs. Instructions have also been given to hold meetings with various companies and employers.

More than 2 lakh to get employment annually
Deendayal Upadhyaya Grameen Vikas Kaushal Yojana was launched by the Central Government in the year 2014. The country’s 5.5 crore poor rural youth were to be given training for small jobs and started their own work. More than 250 industrial skills were to be taught in 610 districts. A target was set to provide training, employment to more than 2 lakh youth every year. However, the plan fell short of the target.

States cited corona infection as the reason behind
In the report sent to the Center, the states have blamed the decreasing number on Corona, but they have not been able to give a clear reason for the low number of youth despite the situation being normal. The reasons given by the states:

  • Due to corona infection, neither training could be given nor employment fairs were held.
  • The officials were busy with other government programs including vaccination.
  • Online option was made available to rural youth, but they could not join due to lack of resources.
  • Awareness campaign ended. The youth could not get the information.
