Six Sri Lankan women’s players test positive for COVID-19 in Zimbabwe

Six Sri Lankan women cricketers, who took part in the World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe, have tested positive for COVID-19, the Asian country’s cricket board said on Sunday.

Cricket’s governing body ICC abandoned the qualifiers in Zimbabwe on Saturday after a new COVID-19 variant was discovered in South Africa that prompted widespread travel restrictions.

It was not known whether the Sri Lankan players’ positive tests were for the new Omicron variant of the virus.

The ICC took its decision after Saturday’s game between West Indies and Sri Lanka, when a member of the Sri Lankan support staff tested positive for COVID-19.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) said, “Steps will be taken to bring back the Sri Lankan women’s team from Zimbabwe.”

The discovery of the Omicron variant in South Africa has prompted some countries to tighten border controls and ban travel from several southern African countries, including Zimbabwe.

Following the cancellation of the qualifiers, the ICC said Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies based on their rankings would advance to next year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

The three countries will be New Zealand, Australia, India, England and South Africa.

South African sport began to shut down on Friday as travel restrictions forced rugby teams and golfers to try to leave the country.
