sivankutty: Covid-19: Online classes not mandatory in Kerala, says V Sivankutty | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister of General Education V Sivankutty said that online classes won’t be a must once schools reopen fully on Feb 21. He was addressing a meeting of teachers’ organizations ahead of the full reopening of schools next week. “Since regular classes start on Feb 21, teachers need not conduct online classes compulsorily. They should be ready to give support to students who do not attend school owing to health issues,” he said.
He also wanted teachers to organize an awareness drive among students against phone/internet addiction. The minister sought the cooperation of all associations so that the academic calendar can be followed strictly and scheduled exams be held as decided.
Sivankutty said the government was committed to improve the academic standard as its failure would negatively affect the society. The unprecedented level of relaxation, given to students who appeared for board exams last year, had led to severe criticism.
Sivankutty said the performance of students in classes one to nine would be assessed and SCERT was asked how they can be evaluated. Classes for junior students will be over in March. Government will decide whether evaluation can be done in April, he said.
