New Delhi: Encrypted chat app Signal A new update has been announced for this missing message Specialty. The messaging app will now enable anyone to turn on the default timer for disappearing messages. Signal introduced the disappearing messages feature in 2016. This feature deletes chats for both sender and receiver after a specific time limit. Earlier, users had to toggle the option on and also choose the time interval for each individual conversation. With this new update, the company aims to reduce the storage space and limit the amount of conversation history.
What is the time period for setting the disappearing message?
The app provides you with nine options to set a timer for missing messages. You can set a timer ranging from 30 seconds to 4 weeks.
How is a message missing on Signal different from that on WhatsApp And Wire?
With this new update, Signal now supports the ability to pre-configure all conversations that you start with a default timer. Users can now set custom timer durations on their conversations so that some content can last as long as 60 seconds and others for 18 minutes or up to 4 weeks.
On the other hand, you have to manually set the disappearing message for all individual chats on WhatsApp. The app also doesn’t offer a custom timer and the chat will disappear after 7 days. At the same time, Telegram users will first have to enable Secret Chat on the app to use the disappearing messages feature.
Can the receiver take a screenshot of missing messages?
Signal also warned users that the vanishing messages feature cannot guarantee utmost confidentiality as the receiver can take screenshots of messages.
How to Enable Disappearing Messages on the Desktop
Step 1: First, open the Signal app on the desktop and go to ‘File’ and then ‘Preferences’.
Step 2: After clicking on the ‘Preferences’ option, scroll down and find the ‘Default timer for new chat’ option under ‘Missing messages’. Now select ‘Off’ from the dropdown option to tweak the default missing message timer for new chats.
Step 3: You can choose any option to set the default disappearing message timer.
Step 4: Now you can click on ‘custom timing’ option and select the timer as per your choice and click on ‘set’.
How to set up disappearing messages on a smartphone
Step 1: First of all open the Signal app on your smartphone.
Step 2: Now tap on the three dots on the top right corner and then select ‘Settings’.
Step 3: Now go to ‘Privacy’ from the Settings page where you will see the option of ‘Default timer for new chats’ under ‘Disappearing messages’ section.
Step 4: Now you can select the duration as per the requirement. After that tap ‘Save’ to confirm the changes.
