Sidhu’s Patiala House Now A ‘Strategy Hotspot’ With Loyalists Considering Next Steps

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s ancestral home in Patiala’s Yadvindra Enclave has been turned into a political hotspot, which is seeing a flurry of activities following his resignation earlier in the day.

Sources said that half a dozen Punjab Congress MLA And late Tuesday evening some local party leaders reached Sidhu’s house. A few more people, including Raj Kumar Verka, are also expected to reach out and talk to Sidhu to persuade him to take back his decision.

Senior party leaders including Kuljit Nagra, Inderjit Bularia, Razia Sultana and Kulwinder Danny are currently meeting with Sidhu on the first floor of the House. Pargat Singh, who reached Sidhu’s residence at around 8 pm, went straight to the first floor of the meeting to talk to the angry leader.

The Sidhu camp expects around 50 party leaders to submit their resignations to the party high command from their Patiala House to show strength. Reliable sources said the MLAs have told Sidhu that his resignation could lead to major factionalism in Majha, Malwa and Doaba regions, where Congress leaders are already upset over the cabinet expansion.

Bawa Henry, Sukhpal Khaira, Kulbir Jeera, Nirmal Singh Sutrana, Barinder Meet, Singh Pahra, Piermal Khalsa, Jagdev Singh Kamalo, Inderveer Bularia and Raja Waring were present at Sidhu’s house.

Sidhu, who was appointed Punjab Congress chief in July, resigned from the post earlier in the day, triggering a shock wave in the state’s political circles.

In his resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu said that he can never compromise on the future of Punjab and the agenda of Punjab’s welfare. His resignation comes amid reports of a rift with the new Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi over the induction of his cabinet, especially ‘tainted’ MLA Rana Gurjit Singh.

Hours before Singh’s induction on Monday, a section of Congress leaders from the state had also written to Sidhu, demanding that the tainted former minister not be included. The leaders also demanded that the cabinet berth be filled by giving representation to a clean Dalit leader.
