Sidharth Malhotra’s Kargil War film Shershaah to release directly on OTT, say sources

The second wave of the Covid-19 outbreak put the brakes on several industries, including the entertainment industry. With aggressive vaccination campaigns and a drop in positive cases, the country is slowly returning to normalcy. But the danger of a third wave is greater. Things are not looking bright and it will take some time for the cinema hall doors to open.

In the absence of theatres, OTT platforms became the final release medium for films that were shot and produced. Many movies that didn’t want to wait for cinema halls to reopen, premiered directly on the web. Many filmmakers are still opting for digital premieres, bypassing mainstream theatrical releases. The latest to join the worldwide web premiere bandwagon is Sidharth Malhotra’s Shershaah. In February, when things were looking normal, the makers had announced that the film would hit the theaters on July 2, 2021, but now they have decided to skip it and release it directly on OTT. has learned that the film, which is based on the life of Captain Vikram Batra, who died in the Kargil War and was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, will premiere directly on Amazon Prime Video. The film, co-produced by Dharma Productions and Shabbir Boxwala, is believed to have been sold at a good price to the international streaming giant.

A source reveals, “The makers have decided to skip the theatrical release considering the current situation which is getting unpredictable with every passing day. The deal between the makers and Amazon Prime Video is said to have more or less closed and they Will announce once the paperwork is done. The makers are looking to release the film next month.”

Directed by Vishnuvardhan, Shershaah will see Malhotra playing a double role in the film as Vikram Batra and his identical twin brother Vishal Batra. The film also stars Kiara Advani, Javed Jaffrey, Shiv Pandit.
