Shruti Haasan: ‘Never used my parents’ name or connection to get a job’

Speaking on the nepotism debate, Shruti Haasan said that though having a surname opens doors but she has never used her parents’ name or connection to get a job.

Shruti Haasan who has carved a niche for herself, not only in Bollywood But even in regional cinema, she recently revealed that she never used the names of her actor parents to get a job or pay her bills. Shruti, daughter of superstar Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur, was in a special conversation with Times Digital. Speaking his mind on the nepotism debate in the film industry, he said, “I have never denied and I don’t think you should when you have a surname. I know it opened a door for me.” But I also know, with my hand on my heart and God as my witness, that I never used my parents’ names or connections to get a job, do something, or pay my bills after I started. Didn’t have to.”

She continued, “I have worked through this business like no other person and I am proud of it but I never shy away from the fact that my surname opened doors.”

The actress took the example of designer handbags to make a point, “I’ve always said it’s a really cool handbag from Fendi, or Gucci or Louis Vuitton that’s really expensive, but you can’t put it down anywhere And you have to fill it with your stuff. It’s really just my point of view.”

“When I came there was talk about surnames, but the truth of the matter was really difficult and challenging for me. I was pretty much off after my first film. But coming back and staying because I love doing what I do was an amazing learning experience for me on a human level. We all last as long as we have the opportunities,” she said.

On the work front, Shruti will be next seen in Prashanth Neel’s action flick Salar opposite Prabhas. The film, slated to release in 2023, was initially delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
