Shreyas Iyer ruled out of India vs Australia ODI series, will go to NCA to complete his rehab

Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia and is also likely to miss some part of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season.

Iyer had earlier complained of pain in his back and did not come out to bat during the fourth Test against Australia as Rohit Sharma’s men posted an innings of 571 in reply to Australia’s 480.

Later, he was dropped for the fourth Test which eventually ended in a draw as India won the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 by 2-1.

For most of the series, he fielded at the dropped-in catching position, which could also increase the load on his back. He recently recovered from a back issue that kept him out of the series opener, where Suryakumar Yadav played in his absence.

Iyer is likely to return to the NCA to continue his rehabilitation from a back injury that has bothered him for some time. The fact that the 28-year-old might not be a part of IPL 2023 is also a big blow for Kolkata Knight Riders, who Shreyas was about to run for the second year.

The absence of Shreyas Iyer means Suryakumar Yadav will be preferred in the middle order along with Rajat Patidar.

While the Indian team was in action against Australia in Ahmedabad, a training camp was held at the NCA in Bengaluru for the white-ball specialists, Patidar was also present at the camp along with Yuzvendra Chahal, Umran Malik and others.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma gave a grim update on Iyer’s fitness at the post-match press conference.

“Poor guy. It was just such an unfortunate incident. He had to wait the whole day to bat and then when the day was over, his back problem came back again. He was sent to the hospital for scans. I don’t know the exact scan report, but it looks like he is not doing well,” Rohit had said.

“Obviously, that’s why he’s not here, so we don’t know how long it will take him to recover or when he’ll be back. When it happened, it didn’t feel so good. I hope he recovers quickly and comes back to play again,” the 35-year-old said.

While Iyer took the field in Ahmedabad, he was absent for the last two days of the match, and was later taken for scans, but the results did not look very promising.
