‘Shortcut will cut you short’: Taking a dig at leaders, Gadkari said, ‘Big leaders cannot be made by cutting-outs’

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari took a dig at ministers who are famous by putting up their own hoardings while addressing a national convention of the Indian Student Parliament. He urged the students not to run after propaganda or change their ideology for short term gains if they wanted to make a mark in politics.

“Don’t run after efforts like publicity and putting up your cutouts. I don’t understand why people put cutouts in cities and towns to publicize their birthdays. They spend out of their own pocket for this promotion. But what have they done? Do you think you can become a big leader by placing cutouts, publishing ads? Did Jayaprakash Narayan, George Fernandes and Atal Bihari Vajpayee use these methods? Please don’t take shortcuts as shortcuts will make you short,” Gadkari said while addressing the conclave.

He also talked about how he was photographed for everything during the pandemic when he was trying to help people in his constituency. “I liked it too. But soon I felt bad about it and asked people not to click my photo. I got more satisfaction when people appreciated the work. Got more support and appreciation. Any kind of publicity you get that level of satisfaction,” he said.

He further added that while there will be many people to take credit for any victory, defeat is always an “orphan”. Gadkari quoted a social thinker to say that while useless and dead fish swim with the stream, living fish swim against the current.

He also stressed on the importance of truth in the long run and said, “We remember great social leaders who did not compromise on their ideologies. But those who change parties and become ministers or chief ministers will remain in the memory of the people for a long time.” We don’t live till now. We should not compromise on our ideologies.”

As a senior leader, the guiding path for young leaders, Gadkari said that those who aspire to join politics must learn that between the purse and the individual, an individual is important; Between the individual and the party, the party is bigger; And between party and ideology, ideology comes first.
