Shiv Sena fields late MP Mohan Delkar’s wife for Dadra and Nagar Haveli Lok Sabha bypolls

The Shiv Sena has fielded independent MP late Mohan Delkar’s wife Kalaben Delkar for the by-polls to the Dadra and Nagar Haveli Lok Sabha seat, to be held later this month. The seat fell vacant after the death of seven-time MP Mohan Delkar in February this year.

The bypoll is scheduled for October 30 and the last date for filing nomination papers was October 8. Counting of votes will take place on November 2.

Kalaben Delkar on Friday filed his nomination from the reserved seat of Scheduled Tribes (ST). She will contest against Mahesh Gavit of the BJP and Mahesh Dhodi of the Congress in the bypolls, which will be held in the country with by-elections to two other Lok Sabha and 30 assembly constituencies.

On February 22, Delkar allegedly hanged himself at a hotel in Mumbai’s Marine Drive area. He had been a member of both the Congress and the BJP at different times in his political career, and was elected to the Lok Sabha seven times from the Dadra and Nagar Haveli constituency.

Making an emotional appeal to voters during his election campaign, Kalaben Delkar said, “They forced him to kill himself, it was nothing less than the murder of a popular leader. We have to punish his killers. Fight our justice.” God will not forgive if we don’t fight now. I have shed a lot of tears, but now is not the time to shed tears but give them a befitting reply.

“This is the first time I have come before you without Mohanbhai. I assure you that I will be strong enough to give you no room for complaint. Because of the love of the people and their ideals, Mohanbhai won seven times. I am the same Will take forward the ideology that made him such a popular leader.”

Delkar won the 2019 Lok Sabha election by defeating then BJP MP Natubhai Patel by a margin of 9,001 votes. Patel had defeated Delkar twice, in 2009 and 2014, when he contested on a Congress ticket.

In March, the Mumbai Police had registered an FIR in connection with Delkar’s death on charges of abetment to suicide, which did not amount to a suicide, to name a few. Delkar’s wife and son also met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in this regard.
