Shayani Ekadashi: Significance, method of worship and auspicious time

Devshayani Ekadashi is celebrated on the 11th day of the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Ashadha. It is also known as Maha Ekadashi, Pratham Ekadashi and Padma Ekadashi. This day is very auspicious for Vaishnavas, the devotees of Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu scriptures, on this day Lord Vishnu goes to sleep for four months. The day also marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a four-month holy period in the Hindu calendar that ends on Prabodhini Ekadashi. Devshayani Ekadashi falls just after the famous Jagannath Rath Yatra and usually falls in the month of June or July of the English calendar.

Shayani Ekadashi 2021: Tithi and time

This year Devshayani Ekadashi is falling on Tuesday, July 20. Ekadashi Tithi will start in July at 09:59 PM and will continue till 07:17 PM on July 20. People observing Ekadashi fast can do Parana on Dwadashi Tithi, i.e., July 21 between 05:36 am to 08:21 am.

Shayani Ekadashi 2021: Rituals

On Shayani Ekadashi, devotees observe fast and avoid consuming grains, beans, cereals, some vegetables like onions and some spices. Taking a holy bath on this day is considered auspicious. The idol of Lord Vishnu is dressed in bright yellow robes and is worshiped by offering flowers, betel nuts, betel nuts and bhog. The puja is completed with offerings. Even on Ashadhi Ekadashi, devotees stay awake all night and sing bhajans.

Shayani Ekadashi, often referred to as the first Ekadashi, is one of the most important days for Hindu communities. It is widely believed that those who observe Ekadashi Vrat with utmost devotion are blessed with a happy, successful and peaceful life. The story and significance of Devshayani Ekadashi was narrated by Lord Brahma to his son Narada and Lord Krishna to Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, in the ‘Bhavishyottara Purana’.
