Shashi Tharoor Calls For ‘President’s Rule’ In Manipur As Violence ‘Persists’

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday demanded ‘President’s rule’ in Manipur as violence ‘persisted’ in the northeastern state. Tharoor said on his official Twitter account that the state government was not living up to the work it was elected to do.

“As violence continues in Manipur, all right-thinking Indians must ask themselves what happened to the much-hyped good governance that was promised to us. A year after bringing the BJP to power in their state, the voters of Manipur have You feel cheated.” This is the time of President’s rule, the state government is not ready to do the work for which they were elected,” tweeted Shashi Tharoor.

Violent clashes broke out between tribals and people of the majority Meitei community in Manipur on Wednesday. displacing thousands and killing at least 54, The clashes broke out after a ‘tribal solidarity march’ was organized in ten hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

It is noteworthy that the Meiteis constitute about 53 per cent of the population and mostly live in the Imphal Valley. Tribals, including the Nagas and Kukis, account for 40 percent of the population and live mostly in the hilly districts that surround the valley.

Earlier on Saturday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that peace committees would be formed in every assembly constituency to implement peace initiatives at the grassroots level. Singh made the announcement after chairing an all-party meeting on the prevailing situation in the violence-hit state.

“Held an all-political party meeting to discuss the current situation in Manipur and work collectively to bring peace and stability in the state,” he said.

It was resolved during the meeting Appeal for peace in the stateSingh said, and encourage all citizens to refrain from any actions that could lead to further violence or instability.

The meeting was attended by representatives of various political parties including Congress, CPI, JD(U), NPF, Shiv Sena, TMC, BSP, AAP, MPP, AIFB, MNDF, ABHKP and former chief minister O Ibobi Singh.

“Resolved to form a peace committee in every assembly constituency to implement peace initiatives at the grassroots level,” he tweeted.

Singh also held a video conference with senior officials of the state government, police and paramilitary forces to review the on-ground operations.

“The entire team is working round the clock to ensure peace in the state,” he said.

Earlier, he also met representatives of the Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a civil society organization and All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO).
