Shammi Kapoor’s wife Neela Devi recalled their romance with first wife Geeta Bali.
Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali’s marriage came to an unfortunate end when she died of smallpox at the age of 35.
Legendary actor Shammi Kapoor was known for his lavish lifestyle and his affection for Geeta Bali, whom he eventually married in 1955. It takes a long time for him to recover from the tragedy. Later, on 27 June 1969, Shammi secretly married Neela Devi at her Nepean Sea Road residence. In a recent interview, Neela shared details of Shammi’s bond with Geeta and how he coped with her demise.
During an interview with ETimes, Neela revealed that her earliest memory of Shammi and Geeta as a couple was when she used to see them racing their convertible cars, and that she liked them as a couple. . Before Shammi proposes Neela, he reveals everything about Geeta. Neela recalled that Geeta and Shammi’s marriage had lasted only 8-9 years, and his sudden death was a great shock to her. He recalled that Shammi stayed with Raj Kapoor and was looked after by Krishna Kapoor for six months.
Neela Devi described Geeta Bali as a “very mature person” who understood Shammi Kapoor’s needs and encouraged him to succeed. Neela reminisces about Geeta and Shammi’s first meeting in Mumbai, which happened after Shammi’s split with Nutan. The meeting probably took place in Mumbai. During Shammi’s recovery from the breakup with Nutan. According to Neela, Geeta and Shammi both shared a passion for singing, which helped them to bond, and they also shared a great sense of humour.
Neela also narrated a story that Shammi had told her. “He was shooting for Rangi Raatein in Ranikhet. She (Geeta Bali) didn’t have any role there but to be with him, she said that I will play the role of a boy in the film. Mala Sinha was the heroine and he fell in love from here. This went on for a while until she said yes to him,” she shared. Eventually, when Shammi proposes to Geeta, they get married in the middle of the night.
Neela Devi shared that Shammi Kapoor abstained from alcohol for 21 days from January 1 to January 21 every year in memory of Geeta Bali. Geeta Bali fell ill on 1st January and died on 21st of the same month.
