Sensex climbs over 425 points; Nifty tests 16,500 – Times of India

Mumbai: Equity benchmark Sensex on Thursday jumped 427 points to close at 55,320, tracking heavy buying in index majors Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel and Tech Mahindra despite a weak trend overseas.
The 30-share BSE benchmark ended 427.79 points or 0.78 per cent higher at 55,320.28. The benchmark touched a high of 55,366.84 and a low of 54,507.41 during the day.
Comprehensive NSE Nifty It closed at 16,478.10, up 121.85 points or 0.74 per cent.
Dr Reddy’s was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising 3 per cent, followed by Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharma and Kotak Mahindra Bank.
On the other hand, Tata Steel, NTPC, SBI and Bajaj Finance were the main losers, falling up to 3.81 per cent.
Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Shanghai, Seoul and Hong Kong closed lower, while Tokyo closed higher.
European markets were trading lower during afternoon trading.
Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude slipped 0.13 per cent to $123.42 a barrel.
Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers on Wednesday with shares worth Rs 2,484.25 crore sold, according to stock exchange data.
