Selfie Make-up for Self for Karva Chauth: Shahnaz Husain

New Delhi: Karwa Chauth is a special day for all married women. Mehndi, sindur, glass bangles, bindi are all part and parcel of the Karwa Chauth festival. It gives women the opportunity to look like a bride again! Not only clothes, but your make-up is also important, especially if you are a Selfie fan. If you wish to take Selfie photos, pay special attention to your make-up.

Remember that the image a camera produces is two dimensional. You should emphasize or tone down certain features while applying make-up. Even small flaws are noticeable on camera. So, conceal blemishes, like dark spots, pimple marks, dark circles with special make-up. This is the era of the “selfie,” so one should know how to take a good one. The first thing to consider is the lighting – very important for selfies. Avoid shooting selfies outside in the middle of the day when the sun is overhead. If you are inside, its best to take a selfie near a window, as natural light will help.

The skin should be cleansed. For oily skin, apply astringent lotion, using cotton wool. For dry skin, apply a moisturising lotion. Then apply matte (non-shiny) foundation. The main foundation should be as close to the normal skin colour tone as possible.

Apply lighter shade of concealer or foundation to the darker  areas on your face, like dark circles around the eyes. While applying foundation on the face, blend it well. Use beige tinted powder to set the foundation. For a broad nose, apply darker shade of foundation or bronzer on the sides of the nose and light colour down the centre. A matted bronzer under the cheekbones creates cheek hollows. Apply highlighter on top of cheekbones. For pimples, just apply foundation over it. Wait for it to dry and then apply foundation on the entire face. Touch up the pimple again with foundation. Then apply powder to “set” the foundation.

To conceal pits (tiny holes) left by acne scars, take a foundation which is a shade or two lighter than the one you use on your entire face. Apply the light foundation into the pits, using a fine brush or cotton bud. A concealer can also be used. Then, apply your normal foundation on the rest of the face.

The eyes should look bright for the Selfie look. So, use a darker eye shadow like chocolate brown.  For your eyeliner and mascara, keep to black, as it helps to brighten the eyes. Outline the eyes with kajal or dark eye pencil. Apply it to the upper lid and smooth out with cotton bud. Gently blend a line of kajal or eye pencil on the lower lid. Then apply mascara. Outline the lips with the same colour lip liner as your lipstick. Or outline with a slightly darker lip pencil and smudge it with sponge tipped applicator. Avoid a dark outline for the lips. Avoid very pale lip colours. Go for a bright colour. Apply a little gloss only on the centre of the lips.

A Bindi is an integral part of make-up for karva chauth. Look for a decorative bindi, to match the colour of your dress. A bindi, studded with small sparkling stones, combined with a bright colour would be most attractive.

Just before the Selfie is taken, powder the forehead and nose and then blot with tissue to remove sweat and oil.
