Kalyan Singh had been an MLA for 8 consecutive terms from Atrauli Assembly of Aligarh. During this he was MLA from Jana Sangh, Janata Party and BJP. But there came a period when he became weak in his own stronghold. In 2012, when his daughter-in-law Premlata from his Jankranti Party contested from Atrauli, his deposit was also forfeited. However, after his return to the BJP, when his grandson Sandeep Singh contested from the same Atrauli assembly, he also became the youngest MLA.

Kalyan Singh was MP for two terms. In 2004, he was MP from Bulandshahr and for the second time in 2009 became MP from Etah.
