Kolhapur: In the backdrop of violence in parts of the state in protest against the violence in Tripura, Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been imposed in Sangli district of Maharashtra.
The prohibitory orders will remain in force till November 20.
“Protest rallies held amid Tripura violence turned violent. Anti-social elements can take undue advantage of tension and create law and order issues in the district, due to which Section 144 of CrPC has been invoked for five days. Meetings, carrying weapons and creating tension by spreading propaganda will be punished,” said Abhijeet Choudhary, Sangli collector.
Violence has erupted in the past one week in Amravati, Nanded, Pusad, Malegaon and Karanja towns.
Before Sangli, Section 144 was imposed in several other districts, Pune Rural being the recent one.
The district has a history of communal tension. There were riots in Miraj city in 2005. In view of the history, the administration has deployed more security in Sangli and Miraj.
The messages circulated on social media are being closely monitored.
