Scuffle broke out between 2 groups in stampede: Shrine Board

In a statement, the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board said 12 people were killed in Saturday’s stampede “due to a scuffle between two groups of pilgrims”. Of the pandemic The board said that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also the chairman of the board, was informed about the stampede at 3 am and has been monitoring the situation continuously since then.

“National Green Tribunal has limited the normal capacity of yatra per day to 50000. Appropriately, keeping in view the COVID-19 pandemic, 35000 pilgrims are expected to proceed for yatra on 31st December 2021 and 1st January 2022. Permission was granted,” the SMVDSB said in a detailed statement on the tragic incident.

It said that on January 1, a stampede broke out near gate number three of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan at around 2:15 am. “Unfortunate incident, a scuffle broke out between two groups of pilgrims leading to a stampede. A total of 12 pilgrims lost their lives and 16 others were injured in this unfortunate incident.”

The board as well as the Reasi district administration immediately shifted the injured pilgrims to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayan Superspeciality Hospital, Kakryal after providing first aid at the Medical Unit building for special treatment, the statement said.

A three-member panel has been constituted to probe the stampede and submit the report within a week. The committee headed by Principal Secretary (Home) was constituted by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
