Scrap EWS Quota in Medical College Recruitments: Activists | Nagpur News – Times of India

Nagpur: The Department of Medical Education and Medicine (MEDD) has released the notification to fill 202 Group A posts of Professor and Associate Professor in government medical colleges of the state. Out of these, 24 posts have been reserved for Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
The posts will be filled through Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC).
A local worker has objected to the decision to allot 24 posts under the EWS quota, when the minimum salary of candidates will be around Rs 1 lakh per month, while the eligibility is up to Rs 8 lakh per year.
MEDD has advertised 91 posts of Professors and 111 posts of Associate Professors under 20 specializations from General Medicine to Community Medicine for each recruitment drive.
As per the norms, 10% of the advertised seats fall under EWS quota. However, breakup under both the ranks denotes posts exceeding the prescribed limit under EWS quota. Under Professor category, 11 posts are reserved for EWS, while 13 posts are for Associate Professor. Ideally, the reserved posts should have been 9 and 11 respectively.
Medical secretary Saurabh Vijay did not respond to TOI’s calls and messages.
Atul Khobragade, an activist belonging to various backward class groups, has called it a “conspiracy” to deprive SC/ST and OBC candidates of career advancement scheme, demanding the abolition of reservation.
“Basic qualification is Doctor of Medicine (MD), MS or DNB with 3 to 4 years experience as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. In both the essential qualifications, the candidate must be earning at least Rs 1 lakh per month. How does it fit into the EWS norms,” he asked.
Khobragade said that the posts of Professor and Associate Professor should be made available in the open category.
“Already, there is a huge backlog of SC/ST and OBC candidates in medical college recruitments. The government should speed up their recruitment. By reserving EWS seats in this way, the government is only indicating that it is not ready to mainstream SC/ST and OBC candidates, but is sidelining them. Keeping these seats in open category will give fair opportunity to all to apply.
Khobragade said that since 24 posts have been reserved under EWS quota, SC/ST and OBC cannot apply for them, while it easily becomes “only for open category candidates”.
