Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that India’s scientific community should work to make India ‘self-reliant’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that India’s scientific community should work to make India ‘Self-reliant’ (self-reliant). Developments in science should be aimed at meeting India’s needs, and this should be an inspiration to our scientific community, he said in his address to the Indian Science Congress held in Nagpur via video conferencing.

He cited the growing energy needs of the country and urged the scientific community to come up with innovations in this area that would benefit the country.

He said that since India is home to 17-18 per cent of the world’s population, the progress of such a large number of people would accelerate global progress as well.

India today is using scientific tools for progress and the results are visible, he said, adding that India moved up from 81 in 2015 to 40th position in the Global Innovation Index in a list of 130 countries.

He said that scientific endeavors can turn into great achievements when it moves out of the lab and reaches the “zamin” (ground), when its impact ranges from global to grassroots level, and when the transformation takes place in research as well as in real life. Be visible, he said.
