The West Bengal cabinet on Monday approved a scholarship scheme for OBC students, which includes an annual educational grant of Rs 800.
Medhashree scheme was launched by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Earlier this month, who criticized the BJP-led central government’s move to stop scholarship for students from backward castes and minority communities.
A senior official said the cabinet also approved the bifurcation of Mohammad Bazar police station into three parts and setting up of two police stations – Rampur and Deucha – in Birbhum district.
The decision was taken to increase vigilance in the district in view of the Deucha Pachami coal project, he said. The state cabinet also approved creation of 2,606 new posts in various departments of the state government.
