Scary Visuals: Heavy Rains, Landslides, Flash Floods, River Fury Give Himachal Sleepless Time

Heavy damage to properties along with loss of life due to landslides and swollen rivers due to incessant rains were reported from across Himachal Pradesh. Videos have gone viral on social media showing the condition Himachal Pradesh is suffering from. Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur on Sunday appealed to the Center to provide all possible help to the people affected due to the inclement weather. The former chief minister of Himachal Pradesh also urged the state government of CM Sukhu to give priority to the safe evacuation of people without any further delay.

The hill state is currently grappling with landslides and flash floods in various districts due to rising water level in Beas river. These natural calamities have resulted in the unfortunate loss of innumerable lives. Besides this, the raging Beas river has entered Pandoh village in Mandi district, resulting in damaged houses and washing away of cars. Last Sunday, Panchvaktra bridge in Mandi collapsed due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, affecting almost all the districts. This incessant rain caused landslides and flash floods in various areas. Mandi Additional District Magistrate Ashwini Kumar said that the historic bridge was washed away due to rise in the water level of the river. Besides, bridges connecting Aut village to Banjar and Pandoh villages were also washed away in the swollen Beas river in Mandi district. Reacting to the incident, former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said that the washed away bridge was of great importance as the “identity of Himachal”.

The Meteorological Center in Shimla has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall with thundershowers at most places and very heavy rainfall at isolated places. These conditions are expected to prevail in Shimla, Solan, Kinnaur, Sirmaur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur and Hamirpur districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and adjoining districts of Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh on Sunday.
