New Delhi: The conch shell is of great importance in the worship performed in the Sanatan tradition because the conch is very dear to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi reside in the corner of the house where the conch is blown.

It is said that Lord Vishnu had incarnated in the form of Shri Krishna during the Mahabharata period, and had a conch called Panchjanya. It is believed that the conch shell was one of the 14 gems that came out during the churning of the ocean, hence it is also called a gem.

Since Mata Lakshmi originated from the churning of the ocean, the conch shell is considered to be the brother of Goddess Lakshmi.

There are two types of conch shells.

Importance of conch in Hinduism during worship

  • After worshiping every morning and evening in haunted houses, blowing conch shell removes obstacles related to ghosts etc.
  • By blowing the conch, the lungs are always strong and the defects of speech are removed. The mind remains calm.
  • The blowing of conch kills microorganisms and germs.
  • The conch should always be kept full of water at the place of worship. There is a religious belief that it keeps peace and tranquility in the house.
  • After the worship, the house becomes pure by sprinkling conch water in the house. This eliminates negative energy in the house and increases positive energy.
