With a fierce battle raging in Ukraine’s eastern Donbass, the latest satellite images show the extent of the destruction caused by the relentless and relentless Russian artillery. The Kremlin is focusing its attacks and operations on Severodnetsk, the largest city still under Ukrainian control in the Luhansk region of the Donbass.
High-resolution images collected by Maxar Technologies over a 24-hour period on Monday show buildings damaged by artillery shelling around the city of Severodonetsk and a hospital. From a hole in the roof to burnt buildings, the images show how the area has been devastated by the incessant shelling.
Severodonetsk, an industrial centre, is important to Russia’s plan as its fall would open the way to Donetsk’s main city, Kramatorsk. At least 70 percent of Severodnetsk is reported to be under Russian control, although Ukrainian forces are fighting back.
In Rubizan, a town just 20 minutes from Severodnetsk, the effects of the Russian invasion can be seen in photographs that are just one day apart.
While the first image – before the attack – shows the buildings completely intact, the second photo released by Maxar shows almost complete destruction.
Where the buildings stood 24 hours ago, there is only debris now.
The Russian military is using multiple rocket launchers or MRLs to carry out attacks. Located about 11 km northeast of Severodnetsk, MRL can be seen in lush fields, with their rocket pods oriented towards Severodnetsk. Scorching marks on the ground behind one of the MRLs are a clear indication of recent firing activity.
With smoke in the air, at least seven artillery strikes could be seen around the city of Dolina in southwestern Ukraine. Heavy shelling can also be seen in satellite images along the Siversky Donets River and the city of Bogorodichne, which is located northwest of Slovyansk.
Further images of the area show the plains filled with hundreds of artillery craters

After retreating from Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and Kharkiv during the early stages of Russia’s invasion, the Kremlin has largely focused its attack on the Donbass, claiming it is on a mission to liberate the region.
