Sarnath’s 23-year wait was long to get a place in the UNESCO list. Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: The Rudreshwar Temple, (also known as the Ramappa Temple) near Warangal in Telangana, was on Sunday included in the UNESCO World Heritage List but it is an ancient Buddhist site. Sarnath Varanasi has been lagging behind for more than two decades to be included in the World Heritage List.
Sarnath was proposed in the cultural category by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in July 1998, and has since been on the tentative list of UNESCO, while the Ramappa Temple, a 13th-century engineering marvel, is named after its architect, Ramappa. is kept. It was proposed by the government as its sole nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage Site tag for the year 2019.
After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya (Bihar), the Buddha gave his first sermon and set in motion the wheel of Dhamma at Sarnath in Varanasi. Sarnath, located about 8 km from the Varanasi district headquarters, has several monuments, which are divided into two groups. All other monuments at sites including Chaukhandi Stupa under Group ‘A’ and Stupas under Group ‘B’, monasteries, temples etc.
The Chaukhandi Stupa is a tall brick structure with an octagonal tower on top.
According to the description mentioned in the tentative list, the octagonal tower is a Mughal monument, which was built in 1588 AD by King Todarmal’s son Govardhan to commemorate the visit of Humayun to this place. The second group, which includes the remains of several stupas, monasteries and pillars of Ashoka, made of brick and stone and dating from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD, forms the major and important section of the site. The Ashoka Pillar Dharmarajika Stupa, Dhameka Stupa, temple remains and a series of monasteries and the Mannat Stupa are the most important remains of the site.
“We had prepared a dossier of Sarnath Buddhist sites for the main list of UNESCO World Heritage and sent it to the directorate in 2020,” ASI Sarnath circle superintending archaeologist NK Sinha told TOI on Monday.
According to sources, the dossier is yet to be sent to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for nomination in the heritage list.
Meanwhile, the iconic riverfront of Varanasi has been included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage on April 13 this year after a proposal was submitted to UNESCO by the Permanent Delegation of India.
As per the operational guidelines, it is mandatory to place a monument/site on the provisional list before being considered for the final nomination dossier. As per the rules, any country can submit a nomination dossier after one year of being on the tentative list.
