A video has surfaced on social media in which a woman is purportedly alleging that she was stopped from entering a restaurant in the national capital because she was wearing a saree.

The woman alleged that she was denied entry to a restaurant in Delhi because traditional Indian attire is not ‘smart casual’, which appears to be a dress code. The incident took place at a restaurant named Aquila Delhi on August Kranti Marg, where on entry the staff barred the woman from entering as she was wearing a sari.

In an undated and unverified video being shared widely on Twitter, the woman asks a hotel employee why sarees are not allowed. The employee responds that “sari does not count as smart casual”, claiming that the hotel only allows patrons to stay in smart casual.

Sharing the video, user Anita Choudhary wrote: “Sari is not allowed in Aquila restaurant as Indian saree is no longer a smart dress. What is the concrete definition of smart dress please tell me. Please define smart dress so that I can wear saree stop wearing it.”

The video soon went viral and angry netizens slammed the restaurant for its dress code policy.

Some users called the hotel’s rules “discriminatory” and “elitist”.

“Legally this restaurant is probably safe because a private place can impose its own dress code on patrons.
