Sanjay Leela Bhansali announces Hiramandi on Netflix, recalls film shoot that inspired him to become a filmmaker

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently celebrated 25 years of his debut film Khamoshi: The Musical, which released in 1996. The renowned filmmaker, who is known for critically acclaimed films including Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, will be making a mega-series with Netflix called Hiramandi. The series was announced at Netflix’s Today event, where several other shows and movies were also announced by the OTT platform. In a pre-recorded interview in Tudum, Bhansali spoke about his childhood memory of watching the shooting of the film, which inspired him to become a filmmaker.

He said, “I remember when I was a kid of 4 years old and my father took me on a shoot to watch – he went to visit his friends, and he said you sit here I’ll just meet my friends And come and I was sitting in the studio. I thought this was the place I felt most comfortable in, more than a school, more than a playground, or more than a cousin’s house, or anywhere in the world, I thought it was the most beautiful place in the whole world and I was watching a cabaret being shot and they kept doing it over and over again. But actually what I remember the most about that evening is when my father told me “Sit here and don’t move, don’t go anywhere else. Today when I look back and realize that I’ve been there for 25 years, for that matter, I’ve dreamed of being here for the rest of my life.” And I’m glad I’m stuck here and doing what I have to do.”

He also spoke about his journey in the film industry, saying, “I still remember going to a theater, as a kid, and seeing those projectors beamed on the screen, my brain was full of light. Also, my mind would never have been there. My mind would be here and ghosts would float in it and say, OK, one day my story will float.”

He further added, “All these things I have made. I think I have made 9 films and am making 10th. It’s been 25 years and 25 more years.”

Talking about Hiramandi, Bhansali said, “Hiramandi was something that my friend Moin Baig got 14 years back. And then finally, when we presented it to Netflix and they loved it. He felt it had great potential to make a mega-series. It is very ambitious. it is too big. It is very huge. You have the story of the courtiers before independence. He placed music and poetry and dance and politics within the chambers, the art of living and emerging as a conqueror.”

Meanwhile, the director has also made Gangubai Kathiawadi, which is also awaiting its release. The film stars Alia Bhatt as a mafia queen.
